Future Tripping
Future Tripping: The act of spending time thinking and worrying about things in the future that haven't happened, you can’t control, and may not even happen. Are you struggling with future tripping?
Helpful Strategies to Manage Future Tripping:
-Acknowledge that you are future tripping
-Distract your mind by phoning a friend, watching a funny movie, or doing a crossword puzzle.
-Work to stay in the present moment.
-Remind yourself “I will cross that bridge when I get there, worrying about it won’t change anything”.
-Use “thought stopping”: say to the thought “STOP, I am choosing to stay in the present”.
-Get the thought out of your mind by writing it down. You can then put the paper in a safe place, rip it up, or throw it away.
Future tripping may be trying to protect you by helping you feel prepared for the future. Be kind to yourself and remember that you are capable of handling the situation if it happens.
