How Trauma Impacts Our Relationships

Our past traumatic experiences can lead to relationship difficulties with friends, family, and romantic partners.

Many times, trauma comes back as a reaction versus a memory. This can be difficult in relationships because others don’t understand or know how to respond to the trauma reaction. We may also be equally as confused or frustrated by our reaction. This mutual confusion may lead to conflict or cause us to withdraw from our loved ones.

Additionally, relationships may not feel safe for someone who has experienced trauma. If this is the case, we may respond by pushing others away to keep ourselves emotionally safe or prevent hurt or abandonment. This can lead to an avoidant and/or anxious attachment.
